Reflection of Teaching (28/02/2022)
There is a certain amount of cringe factor associated with a video version of yourself; especially when you’re being broad cast to over 500 residents across the country and due to the video broadcast format, you are unable to interact directly with residents aside from poll questions coming up real-time. In this way, I cannot ensure that students are actually grasping the material as there is no two-way feedback. Similarly, tasked to cover all of Endocrinology in an hour and fifteen minutes is a near impossible task. This is not my typical teaching style but given the constraints of teaching a review for Royal College, I knew that I needed to cover as much ground as possible with as high energy as possible – otherwise the material would be dry, dull, and dismal. The fast-paced lecture style was to direct students to remember and recall highly testable material. This style of teaching and learning really falls upon Knowles adult learning, where learning is self-directed, based on existing knowledge, with a readiness and motivation towards learning. Knowing if I have done a good job or not – will really depend on the most important exam these residents take, and if that isn’t motivation to teach well – I don’t know what is!
